The Birth of the Club

The birth of the Take Five Jazz Club was the fruit of the youthful audacity of Gendozen (who at the time signed as Marcos Ungaretti) crossed with the sensitivity of Ivone Pacheco. The gear began to turn when Gendozen, then a young man of just 20 years old leading Grupo Raiar, met Ivone, who was 46 years old.

The impact of jazz on the young musician's life had happened nights before, when he witnessed, for the first time in his life, a solo musician creating free chords on the guitar at the legendary Big Som bar in Cidade Baixa. That revolutionary freedom blew the boy's mind, who went home and composed his first theme with jazz influence, titled Risadas β€” breaking with the square harmonic structures of the radios of the time.

Moved by this new passion, Gendozen invited Ivone Pacheco to attend a rehearsal of Grupo Raiar in his newly created studio. Upon witnessing the unique and unmistakable musical signature she possessed at the piano, the 20-year-old fired the idea at the 46-year-old pianist: "Let's make a jazz club!". There, in 1982, in the basement of Ivone's mansion in the PetrΓ³polis neighborhood, the stronghold that would change Porto Alegre's nightlife was born.

The Temple of Improvisation and Welcoming

Beyond the mystique, Take Five became a lasting refuge because it operated in the home and under the human pillars of Ivone Pacheco, witnessed up close by Gendozen. The basement was a territory free of judgments.

Unconditional Welcoming: Ivone received anyone without the slightest discrimination. It didn't matter the background or fame; everyone received the same human warmth.

Absolute Respect for the Musician: At Take Five, no artist was criticized or repressed. Ivone never tried to teach in inappropriate ways or diminish those who were just starting. The only prerequisite to play was a genuine love for music.

Gendozen and Ivone

Although the club had a network of collaborators dedicated to porter, cleaning, and reception functions, the conceptual gear of Take Five depended on a close partnership. For over three decades, Gendozen acted as the right-hand man of Ivone Pacheco in the leadership of the basement.

Until the mid-2010s, the artist was at the forefront of the club's strategic decisions. He was the central figure consulted by Ivone for directing the jam sessions, sharing with her the power of choice and the conduction of the environment. In addition to shared management, Gendozen also coordinated and performed the sound adjustments and technical preparation necessary to guarantee the musical quality that defined the temple of gaΓΊcho jazz.

The Legacy

Today, with Ivone Pacheco eternalized in the cultural memory of the State, Take Five is recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Porto Alegre. The club celebrated 40 years of existence in 2022.
