The Music that Springs from the Subconscious
The genesis of Criação Espontânea (Spontaneous Creation) (also known in his discography as Música Instantânea) goes back to Gendozen's 20s (who at the time signed as Marcos Ungaretti). Driven by an overwhelming passion for the instrument, the young musician spent entire nights playing his traditional wooden piano until total physical exhaustion. Often, sleep would overcome him and he would fall asleep directly on the keys.
It was in that borderline state that a rare phenomenon happened: Gendozen realized he was still playing while dreaming. Determined to investigate that activity of his subconscious, he placed a cassette recorder next to the piano and let the tape roll while trying to stay awake and not stop playing. Invariably, he would fall asleep, but upon listening to the tapes, the musician made a revolutionary discovery.
When analyzing the recordings made in a state of semi-cognition, Gendozen realized that those free compositions possessed a much deeper logic, coherence, and harmony than the rigid technical solutions that the academy and the music market imposed.
• Music formatted for radio and commerce is designed within "square" and predictable structures to be easily swallowed by the masses. However, that commercial ease acts as a limiter, making the work superficial for the soul.
• The Reverse Process: Criação Espontânea (Spontaneous Creation) takes the opposite path. It nullifies the rational brakes, the shields of the ego, and the need to prove something to oneself or to the listener. Without filters or judgments, the fingers establish a direct channel with the subconscious, bringing to the surface the true form and purity of music.
The result of this process is not fast-consumption music, made to stick in the head on the first chord and be forgotten the next day. Música Instantânea (Instant Music) operates on another temporal frequency:
• Gradual Conquest: It is music that conquers the listener little by little, demanding attentive listening.
• Eternal Mutability: Every time one listens to a track recorded by this method, the listener discovers a new nuance, a hidden feeling, or a harmonic turn that they had not noticed before.
• For the Seekers of Meaning: This work is not aimed at the consumerist masses, but at a specific audience that values art as a tool for self-knowledge, who likes to instigate themselves and connect with the world through the most refined senses.
What began in youth with cassette tapes turned into a mature artistic research of a lifetime. Today, this technique is digitally immortalized in several albums. Meu Piano (My Piano), Groenlândia (Greenland), Sombras Azuis (Blue Shadows) and Música Instantânea – Volume 2 (Instant Music – Volume 2) are some examples. Works of pure channeled spontaneous improvisation, where each note was generated in real time, without prior compositions or studio editing, capturing the free flight of Gendozen's mind at the piano.
